For accurate prediction of neutronic characteristics for accelerator-driven systems (ADS) and a source term of spallation neutrons for reactor physics experiments for the ADS at Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA), we have launched an experimental program to measure nuclear data on ADS using the Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator at Kyoto University. As part of this program, the proton-induced double-differential thick-target neutron-yields (TTNYs) and cross-sections (DDXs) for iron have been measured with the time-of-flight (TOF) method. For each measurement, the target was installed in a vacuum chamber on the beamline and bombarded with 107-MeV proton beams accelerated from the FFAG accelerator. Neutrons produced from the targets were detected with stacked, small-sized neutron detectors composed of the NE213 liquid organic scintillators and photomultiplier tubes, which were connected to a multi-channel digitizer mounted with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), for several angles from the incident beam direction. The TOF spectra were obtained from the detected signals and the FFAG kicker magnet's logic signals, where gamma-ray events were eliminated by pulse shape discrimination applying the gate integration method to the FPGA. Finally, the TTNYs and DDXs were obtained from the TOF spectra by relativistic kinematics.

Evaluation of neutron resonance parameters for Zr isotopes

Ichihara, Akira

JAEA-Conf 2017-001, p.103 - 108, 2018/01

In the Nuclear Data Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA-NDC), we are engaged in the evaluation activity for the next version of the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-4.0. Zirconium is an important structural material in nuclear reactors, and zircaloys are being employed in fuel rods. Also, $$^{93}$$Zr is a long-lived fission product (LLFP) with a half-life of 1.61$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ years. At present we are investigating resonance parameters of Zr isotopes using experimental data published after the evaluation of JENDL-4.0. Through this work, a negative resonance of $$^{93}$$Zr in JENDL-4.0 was removed to reproduce the J-PARC/MLF/ANRRI experiment. The resonance parameters for other natural Zr isotopes will be altered by adopting the data obtained at CERN n-TOF experiments.

Nuclear data evaluation of the $$^7$$Li(p,xn) reaction for incident energies up to 200 MeV

Matsumoto, Yuiki*; Watanabe, Yukinobu*; Kunieda, Satoshi; Iwamoto, Osamu

JAEA-Conf 2015-003, p.191 - 196, 2016/03

Neutron emission from the $$^7$$Li(p,n)$$^7$$Be reaction can be divided into two components: a mono-energetic component for the transition to the ground and the 1st excited states and a continuum component formed by $$^7$$Li breakup processes. For the former, we have obtained the differential cross sections by interpolation based on Legendre fitting of available experimental data up to 45 MeV and apply DWBA calculations above 45 MeV. Next, we have applied the CCONE code to DDX calculations of the continuum component, and adjusted pre-equilibrium model parameters to reproduce experimental data well. Finally, both the results are merged and then the evaluated DDX data are completed.

Program POD-P; A Computer code to calculate cross sections for neutron-induced preequilibrium nuclear reactions

Kunieda, Satoshi; Ichihara, Akira

JAERI-Data/Code 2005-005, 33 Pages, 2005/09

JAERI-Data-Code-2005-005.pdf:1.5MB

The computer code, POD-P, was developed to calculate energy spectra and angular distributions of emitted particles for the neutron-induced preequiliblium nuclear reactions. The energy-differential cross sections are computed with the classical one-component exciton model for the nucleon and composite-particle emissions. Along with this, the semi-empirical exciton models are also used for the composite-particle emissions. The double-differential cross sections are derived from those model calculations plus the angular-distribution systematics. The computational method and explanation of input parameters are given with some output examples.

Nagaya, Yasunobu; Okumura, Keisuke; Mori, Takamasa; Nakagawa, Masayuki

JAERI 1348, 388 Pages, 2005/06

JAERI-1348.pdf:2.02MB

To realize fast and accurate Monte Carlo simulation of neutron and photon transport problems, two vectorized Monte Carlo codes MVP and GMVP have been developed at JAERI. MVP is based on the continuous energy model and GMVP is on the multigroup model. Compared with conventional scalar codes, these codes achieve higher computation speed by a factor of 10 or more on vector supercomputers. Both codes have sufficient functions for production use by adopting accurate physics model, geometry description capability and variance reduction techniques. The first version of the codes was released in 1994. They have been extensively improved and new functions have been implemented. The major improvements and new functions are (1) capability to treat the scattering model expressed with File 6 of the ENDF-6 format, (2) time-dependent tallies, (3) reaction rate calculation with the pointwise response function, (4) flexible source specification, etc. This report describes the physical model, geometry description method used in the codes, new functions and how to use them.

Kishida, Norio*; Murata, Toru*; Asami, Tetsuo*; Kosako, Kazuaki*; Maki, Koichi*; Harada, Hideo*; Lee, Y.*; Chang, J.*; Chiba, Satoshi; Fukahori, Tokio

AIP Conference Proceedings 769, p.199 - 202, 2005/05

Nuclear data for photonuclear reactions are required in the field of shielding design of high-energy electron accelerators and high-energy $$gamma$$-ray therapy. The JENDL Photonuclear Data File was prepared by a working group on nuclear data evaluations for photonuclear reactions in Japanese Nuclear Data Committee. From a survey of many literatures, it is difficult to construct the photonuclear data file by using only measured data, since there are not sufficient experimental data. We were therefore evaluating with theoretical calculations based on statistical nuclear reaction models. The photonuclear cross sections that are to be contained in the file are as follows: photoabsorption cross sections, yield cross sections and DDX for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, $$^{3}$$He-particles and alpha-particles, and isotope production cross sections. For the actinide nuclides, photofission cross sections are also included. The maximum energy of incident photons is 140 MeV and stored are the photonuclear data for 68 nuclides from $$^{2}$$H to $$^{237}$$Np.

Iwamoto, Osamu; Herman, M.*; Mughabghab, S. F.*; Oblozinsk$'y$, P.*; Trkov, A.*

AIP Conference Proceedings 769, p.434 - 437, 2005/05

Entirely new evaluations for all the Ge isotopes, from thermal energy to 20 MeV, has been performed with focus on photon production. In the resonance region, parameters were improved considerably compared to earlier evaluations. In the fast region, code EMPIRE-2.19 was used. Validation was done against photon data on Fe and Nb. Isotopic evaluations for Ge were summed up and compared with available measurements on natural Ge. Various quantities related to photon production, showing strong dependence on neutron incident energy, are discussed.

The 2nd version of code system, LICEM-2, has been developed to produce neutron cross section libraries for the MVP continuous energy Monte Carlo code from an evaluated nuclear data library in the ENDF format. The code system can process nuclear data in the latest ENDF-6 format and produce cross section libraries for MVP's capability of transport calculation at arbitrary temperature. By using the present system, MVP neutron cross section libraries have been prepared from the latest evaluations of JENDL, ENDF/B and JEFF data bases. This report describes the specification of MVP neutron cross section library, the details of each code in the code system, how to use them and MVP neutron cross section libraries produced with the code system.

In view of the future plan of Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University, the present study consisted of (1) the transmission experiments of high energy neutrons through materials, (2) experimental simulation of ADSR using the Kyoto University Critical Assembly(KUCA), and (3) conceptual neutronics design study on KUR type ADSR using the MCNP-X code. Through the present study, valuable knowledge on the basic nuclear characteristics of ADSR, which is indispensable to promote the study on ADSR, was obtained both theoretically and experimentally. For the realization of ADSR, it is considered to be necessary to accumulate results of research steadily. For this purpose, it is inevitable (1) to compile the more precise nuclear data for the wide energy range, (2) to establish experimental techniques for reactor physics study on ADSR including subcriticality measurement and absolute neutron flux measurement, and (3) to develop neutronics calculation tools which take into account the neutron generation process by the spallation reaction and the delayed neutron behavior.

Evaluations of neutron nuclear data for medium-heavy nuclides were performed for JENDL-3.3. The present work was undertaken to remove the drawbacks of the previous library JENDL-3.2. Recent measurements and nuclear model calculations were taken into account to improve the accuracy of the evaluated data. The data on natural elements were not produced in order to solve a problem of the inconsistency between elemental and isotopic data except for carbon and vanadium in JENDL-3.3.
